OUr boot Construction Techniques

Have you ever wondered what it means when we say stitchdown construction versus nailed construction? Here is your guide to understanding the differences.

Benefits of a stitchdown style

  • Tough construction, with leather lining between the insole and midsole, and then with the vamp blued and sewn to the edge of the sole. This offers extra water resistance to the stitchdown style.

  • This tends to be a lighter, more flexible style. The Sierra sole carries less weight than the Lug sole.

  • Most stitchdown styles have a shallower toe box, so they offer a better fit for smaller feet.

  • The CSA styles use steel for the toe, shank and plate, so these styles can feel colder in winter weather.

Benefits of a nailed style

  • Rugged construction. The midsole is both glued and nailed to the insole.

  • This tends to be a heavier style, but with the thicker midsole these styles have excellent arch support.

  • There is less movement in the midsole, which means less friction and therefore a much longer lifespan than many other boots.

  • Most nailed styles have a deeper toe box, which offers a better fit for larger feet or high arches.

  • In the CSA styles the safety toe is steel, but there is no steel plate needed and the shank is hardwood, so these styles can feel warmer in the winter.

  • Nailed styles can have a bump toe added for extra protection.
